Porthos CCS: multidisciplinary offshore implementation

SEW Energy responsible for multidisciplinary offshore implementation and project management

It PorthosThe project is developing an infrastructure that will transport and store CO₂ from industry in the Port of Rotterdam in depleted gas fields under the North Sea. The project is a key component of the Netherlands' CCS ambitions and is currently in the implementation phase. SEW Energy has been awarded the contract for the mechanical and electrical and mechanical engineering (E&I) conversion of an offshore gas production platform and is responsible for the execution and project management of this scope.

The challenge

Converting an existing offshore gas production platform into a CO₂ storage infrastructure requires careful and well-coordinated execution. Existing installations must be safely decomplexed, redundant systems removed, and new configurations implemented within the applicable safety and operational constraints. The work takes place in an offshore environment with limited space, strict safety requirements, and dependence on weather conditions and logistics. The combination of mechanical and electrical and electronic equipment (E&I) work requires close coordination between disciplines, personnel, and resources.

The approach

SEW Energy is carrying out the mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation work on this project, combining this with integrated project management. A single project team will oversee work preparation, execution, scheduling, and progress. Project management focuses on daily management, coordination with the client, scheduling and cost control, and ensuring safety and quality throughout the offshore work.

The mechanical scope includes fabrication and conversion work, performed in the workshop and on-site, both onshore and offshore. Piping and construction work are carried out based on established isometric and construction documentation. Organizing horizontal and vertical transport using trucks and cranes is an integral part of the execution.

For the E&I component, SEW Energy is handling the complete de-complexation of the platform, removing all redundant equipment. Construction workpacks are prepared based on the supplied design documents and drawings. Material lists are translated into purchasing rules for cables, ladderways, accessories, and instrumentation. SEW Energy is responsible for the offshore assembly, connection, and completion, including the pre-commissioning phase. Equipment management and the preparation and maintenance of QC documentation run parallel to the work throughout the entire project.

The result

Implementation is in full swing and is proceeding according to plan. Through integrated management of mechanical and electrical and instrumentation activities, combined with in-house project management, SEW Energy maintains control over safety, quality, and progress. The work contributes to an offshore platform being adapted for CO₂ storage and is a vital link in the further realization of the Porthos project.
